Read Like an Expert: 7-Day Challenge
Pick one real book and learn to read it the way researchers do — one science-backed technique per day, with Benjamin Keep.
The content is free to read. To track your progress and keep your streak you need a free account.
Most of us read every day but were never actually taught how to read to learn. In 7 days you'll apply the techniques Benjamin Keep breaks down on his channel — the four levels of reading, pre-reading, precision reading, and problem-driven learning — to one real book you choose on day 1. Each day: one short video and one concrete mission that takes less than 15 minutes. By the end, you'll have a repeatable system for getting more out of everything you read.
Your week at a glance
- Day 1🎬 Discover the 4 levels of reading — and find yours · ✍️ Pick your challenge book and set your target
- Day 2🎬 Learn to pre-read before you commit · ✅ Do a 15-minute pre-read of your book
- Day 3📓 Open your expert reading log
- Day 4🎬 Learn to read with extreme precision · ✍️ Put one dense paragraph under the microscope
- Day 5🎬 Get a plan for when reading gets hard · 🔁 Read into the hard part — don't skip it
- Day 6🎬 Turn your book into problems that make you smarter · ✍️ Write the problem your book helps you solve
- Day 7🎯 Final mission: run a full expert reading session
Day by day, in detail
Day 1🎬 ✍️ Discover the 4 levels of reading — and find yours +1⌄
✍️ Pick your challenge book and set your target
✍️ Choose ONE nonfiction book you'll use for the next 7 days — ideally one you own and genuinely want to understand, not just finish. Write down: the book, which level you've honestly been reading at until now, and one specific thing you want to be able to explain to someone else by day 7.
Day 2🎬 ✅ Learn to pre-read before you commit +1⌄
🎬 Learn to pre-read before you commit
✅ Do a 15-minute pre-read of your book
- I read the back cover, intro, and conclusion to get the author's main argument
- I went through the table of contents and marked the 2-3 chapters that matter most for my goal
- I skimmed headings, bold text, and figures in those chapters without reading in full
- I wrote down 3 questions I expect this book to answer for me
Day 3📓 Open your expert reading log⌄
📓 Open your expert reading log
📓 This log is your central tool for the rest of the challenge. After every reading session — even 15 minutes — add one entry. Writing what you understood in your own words is where the real learning happens; if you can't put it into words, you haven't understood it yet. Aim for at least one entry per day from here on.
Day 4🎬 ✍️ Learn to read with extreme precision +1⌄
🎬 Learn to read with extreme precision
✍️ Put one dense paragraph under the microscope
✍️ Pick the densest, most important paragraph you've hit in your book so far. Read it slowly, word by word. Then write: (1) what the author is literally claiming, (2) one word or phrase you'd normally have skated past and what it actually means here, and (3) the claim restated entirely in your own words.
Day 5🎬 🔁 Get a plan for when reading gets hard +1⌄
🎬 Get a plan for when reading gets hard
🔁 Read into the hard part — don't skip it
🔁 Today I hit a difficult passage on purpose, applied one strategy from the video instead of skimming past it, and logged what finally made it click
Day 6🎬 ✍️ Turn your book into problems that make you smarter +1⌄
🎬 Turn your book into problems that make you smarter
✍️ Write the problem your book helps you solve
✍️ Learning sticks when it's driven by a problem, not by page counts. Write one real problem from your life or work that your book speaks to. Then note which ideas from your reading so far apply to it, and what you'd need to read next in the book to attack it properly. Tomorrow you'll read with this problem in front of you.
Day 7🎯 Final mission: run a full expert reading session⌄
🎯 Final mission: run a full expert reading session
🎯 Do one complete expert reading session today — every technique from this week, on one chapter, driven by your problem.
Here's the sequence: pre-read the chapter for 5 minutes with your day-6 problem in front of you. Read it for real, slowing to precision mode on the dense parts and pushing through anything hard instead of skimming. Then close the book and explain the chapter's key idea out loud or in writing, from memory, in your own words — that was your day-1 target. Finish by logging the session and posting your proof: the book, what you can now explain that you couldn't 7 days ago, and the one technique you're keeping for every book from now on. 📚
