A month of essentials only, a spending log, automatic savings and week one of the 52-week challenge.

This challenge doesn't ask you to guess how much you can save; it helps you find out. For 30 days you spend only on essentials, log every purchase, and week by week turn what you don't spend into a system: an automatic transfer on payday and a running start on the 52-week savings challenge. No investing, no new financial products: just a habit.

Most no spend challenges are a single rule and a calendar to cross off. That works for a week. This one is a 30-day plan with a mission every day: you spend only on essentials, log what you do spend, park every urge on a wish list, and use the money you free up to build something that lasts after day 30.

Why bother? Because a small cushion changes a lot. In the Federal Reserve's survey of household finances for 2025, 63% of adults said they would cover a surprise $400 expense using only cash, savings or a card paid off at the next statement. That leaves more than a third of adults who couldn't handle it that way.

The rules

  • Essentials are allowed: rent or mortgage, groceries, utilities, gas or transit, medicine and the debt payments you already owe. You write your own list on day 2.
  • Everything else is paused: takeout, coffee runs, clothes, online shopping, paid outings, new subscriptions.
  • Planned exceptions are fine if you write them down before you start (a birthday gift, a wedding you already said yes to).
  • Every purchase gets logged, essential or not. The log is how you find the leaks.
  • A slip isn't the end. Log it, find the trigger and keep going. Never miss twice in a row.

What you'll do each week

  1. Week 1 · See where your money goes. Set your rules, start your spending log and take a snapshot of last month.
  2. Week 2 · No-spend days. Use the 30-day wish list, plan a no-spend weekend and learn what your urges have in common.
  3. Week 3 · Pay yourself first. Pick an amount, schedule an automatic transfer for payday and cut at least one recurring bill.
  4. Week 4 · Start the 52-week challenge. Choose your version, set up your chart and make the first deposit.

Why it works

The log makes small leaks visible. The pause breaks the habit of buying on autopilot. And the automatic transfer uses inertia in your favor: in a classic study by Madrian & Shea (NBER), enrolling employees in their company's retirement savings plan by default raised participation sharply even though the plan's terms didn't change. People stick with the default, so make saving the default.

Day by day, in detail

Day 1📖 🔁 How the challenge works +1 mission⌄

📖 How the challenge works

Welcome. For 30 days there's one rule underneath everything: you only spend on essentials. Essentials are what you need to live and work: rent or mortgage, groceries you cook with, utilities and internet, gas or transit, medicine, and the debt payments you already owe. Everything else (takeout, coffee runs, clothes, online shopping, apps, nights out that cost money) goes on pause for 30 days. Each week has one job: 1. Week 1: see where your money actually goes. 2. Week 2: string together no-spend days. 3. Week 3: pay yourself first with an automatic transfer. 4. Week 4: start the 52-week savings challenge. Today you only need to read this and, tonight, check off your first day. Already bought something non-essential today? No problem: the challenge starts counting now.

Day 2📝 📓 🔁 Your challenge rules +2 missions⌄

📝 Your challenge rules

  • What counts as essential for you?
  • What are you pausing for these 30 days?
  • Any planned exceptions already on the calendar? (write "none" if there aren't)
  • What are you saving for?

📓 Your spending log

📓 This is your log, and you'll use it for all 30 days. Write down every purchase as soon as you make it, essential or not: the amount, what it was, and whether you planned it. It takes 20 seconds. It isn't there to judge you. It's there so that a week from now you can see in numbers what you only suspect today.

✅ Get the temptations out of the way

  • Unsubscribed from at least 3 store email lists
  • Deleted saved cards from shopping and delivery apps
  • Moved shopping and food delivery apps off my home screen
  • Turned off sale and promo notifications
  • Unfollowed 3 accounts that make me want to buy things

Day 5📖 🔁 Small leaks: the spending you don't see +1 mission⌄

📖 Small leaks: the spending you don't see

A small leak is cheap, frequent and nearly invisible: the morning coffee, the afternoon snack, the delivery fee, the subscription you forgot about, the "while I'm here" add-on at checkout. One of them doesn't matter. Added up, they do. Run the numbers on one of yours: • A $5 coffee, five workdays a week = $25 a week. • That's about $108 a month. • And $1,300 a year. Today, look through your log and notice which purchases are small leaks. You don't have to cut them forever: during the challenge they're on pause, and at the end you decide which ones come back.

Day 8📖 🔁 The 30-day wish list +1 mission⌄

📖 The 30-day wish list

You're going to want things during the challenge. That's normal: the point isn't to want nothing, it's to stop buying on autopilot. The tool is a wish list: 1. When you want something non-essential, don't buy it: write it down with its price. 2. Leave it there until the challenge ends. 3. On day 30, go through the list. Whatever you still want and can fit in your budget, you can plan for. Whatever you've stopped caring about stays off. Waiting takes the heat out of an impulse: something that feels urgent today often doesn't a few days later. And if you still want it after 30 days, you buy it on purpose, without guilt.

🎯 Challenge: a no-spend weekend

🎯 Get through your next two days off spending on essentials only.

Day 13📖 🔁 If you slip +1 mission⌄

📖 If you slip

At some point you'll spend on something you didn't plan. What decides the challenge isn't that day, it's the next one. What to do: 1. Log it anyway. A purchase you don't write down is one you can't learn from. 2. Find the trigger: tired, a sale, a night out, a bad day? 3. Plan a response for next time: "If X happens, then I'll do Y." For example: "If I open the delivery app hungry, I'll make something quick first." 4. Come back tomorrow. The rule that helps most is simple: never miss twice in a row. Don't check off the habit that day; there's no need to fool yourself. Logging the purchase still counts as an active day for your streak.

Day 15📖 🔁 Pay yourself first +1 mission⌄

📖 Pay yourself first

Most people save whatever is left at the end of the month. There's rarely anything left. Paying yourself first flips the order: on payday, before anything else gets paid, a set amount moves somewhere else on its own. You spend what's left instead of saving what's left. It works because it doesn't rely on willpower. In a classic study (Madrian & Shea, NBER, 2000), a company started enrolling new employees in its 401(k) automatically, with the option to opt out. Nothing else about the plan changed, yet participation was far higher: people tend to stick with whatever the default is. You can use that on yourself and make saving the thing that happens when you do nothing. This week you'll decide how much, when and where. Start with an amount that won't squeeze you: $25 that actually lands every payday beats $250 you cancel by month two.

Day 22📖 🔁 How the 52-week challenge works +1 mission⌄

📖 How the 52-week challenge works

The 52-week savings challenge is a one-year savings chart: each week you set aside a little more than the week before. In the classic version you save $1 in week 1, $2 in week 2, $3 in week 3, and so on up to $52 in week 52. That adds up to $1,378 in a year. Pick a bigger starting amount and the total scales with it: $5 gets you $6,890 and $10 gets you $13,780. There are three versions: • Increasing: start small and go up. Easy at first, heavy in December. • Reverse: start with the biggest week and go down. Harder in January, light at the end of the year. • Flat: the same amount every week. The most predictable. You can build your chart, see the total and save it as a PDF with the 52-week savings challenge guide on Duer.

Day 27📖 🔁 When you can't make a week +1 mission⌄

📖 When you can't make a week

A year is long: a car repair, a short paycheck, a rough month. The challenge survives if you set the rules before it happens: • Skip around. You don't have to go in order: cross off whichever week you can afford. Tight week, small box; good week, big box. • Split it. If week 40 feels heavy, deposit half now and half next week. • Get ahead when you can. A tax refund or a bonus can knock out one of the big weeks early. • Don't raid the challenge money for things that aren't emergencies. If it really is one, use it without guilt and pick the chart back up where you left off. The only thing that ends the challenge is quitting.

Frequently asked questions

What is a no spend challenge?

It's a set period, often a weekend, a week or a month, in which you only spend money on essentials. The goal isn't to suffer through it; it's to break autopilot spending, see where your money goes and redirect what you don't spend into savings.

What are the rules of a no spend challenge?

You decide them before you start: what counts as essential (housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, medicine, existing debt payments), what's paused, and which exceptions are already planned. In this challenge you write them down on day 2 and log every purchase for 30 days.

Can I buy groceries during a no spend challenge?

Yes. Groceries for cooking at home are essential. What's paused is takeout, delivery, snacks on the go and the impulse items that end up in the cart. Planning meals with what you already have makes the month a lot easier.

What if I slip up and buy something?

Log it, figure out what triggered it and get back on track the next day. You don't check off the habit for that day, but logging still counts as an active day for your streak. The rule that helps most is never missing twice in a row.

How much money will I save in 30 days?

It depends on how much you were spending on non-essentials. On day 6 you take a snapshot of last month, and on day 29 you compare: the difference, plus what your automatic transfer and your first 52-week deposit already set aside, is your result.

How long is it and how many missions does it have?

30 days and 66 missions, with 4 videos. You check off each mission when you complete it, and your progress is saved.

Is it free?

Yes. All the content can be read without an account; to track your progress and keep your streak you need a free account.

What if I miss a day?

Your streak counts the days in a row on which you complete at least one mission or add a journal entry. If you miss a day, the streak starts over, but your progress is saved and you pick up where you left off. You can also pause the challenge and resume it whenever you want.

Ready to actually do it?

Accept the Challenge and Duer walks you through it mission by mission: progress, streak and journal.
